Lobotomized Unicorn

About the track

Announced on 24 September 2003 and produced by DjC, it was described as hard, twisted and melodic, with a distorted acid line for "the 303-oholics out there". The band dedicated it to the listeners whose donations had paid for a new computer for the studio, and on MP3.com added that the one way to play it was loud.^1,2

Its acid line came from software: in October 2003 Alexander wrote that the band was using the software synth Tau 2, which also made the bassline. Several listeners in the release thread singled out the TB-303 sound, and in the thread's poll 14 of 19 voters gave the track five stars. Two days after its release it was in the band's set at Waterworld in Montreal, according to listeners who identified the tracks in the recording.^1,3

In November 2003 Alexander explained that Lobotomized Unicorn was the first part of a project called UNICORN, versions of one theme symbolising events in the life of the unicorn, with the lobotomized version standing for "Brainstorm"; Unicorn R.I.P followed. It opened MISSION 2002 Vol.3, released through Ampcast on 30 April 2004.^4,5
