About the release
MISSION 2002 was the band's plan to produce and release one new track a week; in June 2003 its website counted the releases against a goal of 52, and in 2004 the band wrote that it had aimed to make a full five-album volume in one year. The first nine releases, from Spring to Gothenburg Sound, came out on MP3.com in the spring of 2002, nine tracks in ten weeks by the band's count, and made up the first CD.3,4,5,6,7
Like Beyond 2000 and Audiographic Moments before it, it was an independent CD released through MP3.com. The band announced it in a news thread on its message board, where in July 2002 Alexander's signature advertised it at nine tracks, 60 minutes and $10.98; in September 2003 the band's new forum listed it at $11.99. Alexander later put the band's CD sales through MP3.com, all its CDs there together, at about 4,000 copies.1,7,8,9,10
MP3.com sold CDs until 17 November 2003, before the site went offline on 2 December, and by the end of November its page for the band listed the CD as unavailable. The band reissued it through Ampcast on 30 April 2004 at $12, and again on 19 December 2006 through Cafepress, which then became the place to buy the band's CDs. In April 2012 it was remastered for a digital release.11,3,12,13,14,15,4
